Attic Windows

Attic windows are available in many different styles depending on the intended purpose. For an attic, the most common goals are to provide natural lighting, better ventilation and/or to elevate the design elements of a home. The most common styles are skylight and dormer windows, while fixed and also casements are common.

The cost here can be daunting. The tight space can sometimes make window companies bid out the project at a higher than expected rate. This is one reason why we always suggest collecting 3 to 4 quality bids from local companies.

Attic Windows: Advantages

Natural Lighting
The most common reason to install for attic windows is to create better (and more natural) lighting. Non renovated attics typically do not have very good lighting because they weren’t necessarily built as a living space, but rather for storage. One of the best ways to add lighting is with one of more skylights. Skylights can be placed in the roof, which usually encompass as much or more square footage than the walls of an attic. Skylights can be large and add tons of great natural light. One downside of skylights is that it is difficult to block out the light if guests want to sleep in etc.

Better Ventilation
Just as attics are traditionally dimly light, so to do they often lack adequate ventilation. Movable styles such as casements or awnings add great ventilation to a stuffy attic. Having a window on each wall provides great air flow. Skylights can also open up using a crank and can add some nice ventilation options.

Design Elements
They can also add attractive design elements to a home that can create a unique living space. Dormers are quite attractive for many homeowners and add a nice feature to an upper story. Casements or awnings look nice and provide a safety feature since they allow an exit from the house in case of a fire.
