Pella Thermastar Windows
The Pella ThermaStar window is the company’s low end vinyl window. It is sold almost exclusively through big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes. In fact, Pella no longer lists the ThermaStar option on their website. However, it is still included on the Consumer Reports window ratings list, where it received the lowest score of any of the vinyl window models and series.
Many contractors and installers feel that the window feels relatively flimsy and in general uses low end components and hardware. In the past, there have also been issues with Pella’s quality control in terms of their vinyl windows; one batch of windows would be fine, while the next would have seal, sash and weatherstripping problems down the road. Our recommendation would be to opt for something other than the ThermoStar – Reliabilt windows are often sold at the big box stores and are a better alternative to the ThermaStar.
An option within the Pella family might be the Pella 350 Series, which has received much more favorable reviews from installers and contractors and may be worth a look if the price is right and the installer doing the work has a good reputation.
We would encourage consumers to get several bids from local companies. Specifically, 4 bids will give you enough information to see fair market prices and any installation requirements.
